The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
