The Legendary Williams, 45, Receives Wild Card for First Australian Open in Half a Decade.
A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.
Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts
The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Australian Summer
Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to be back in the country and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.
Setting a New Record
Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
