Outrage Erupts as Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Backlash
Personalities from across the partisan spectrum and the entertainment industry are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Statement
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
This is a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. Goldberg pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly dared members in his political party to defend the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
