Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028
The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," Newsom remarked when questioned about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."
Newsom's time in office as governor wraps up in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he noted that any choice is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
The California governor has stepped forward as a notable critic of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary disclosed a strategy to cut government money from California and warned revoking the authority to issue trucking licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160 million from California," he declared, after a recently reported tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that led to loss of life and injured individuals.
Newsom's office highlighted that the federal government had reauthorized the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had before announced he was withholding additional funds from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for truck drivers.
Strong Response from the Team
"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team said in a previous release addressing the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A recently conducted survey found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters believed that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has increased to an mean of about one-third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of more than 40% to current figures.
In previous months, the governor stated while visiting several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The idea that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I await who emerges in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
