Congress Greenlights Legislation to Disclose Epstein Documents

The Senate on Tuesday quickly approved to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by the president and his Republican allies. The administration changed course after months of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Unanimous Passage in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Earlier that day, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

The public have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited patiently,” the top Senate Democrat stated in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Presidential Signature

The measure next will be sent to Trump for his signature. He indicated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though Trump has for an extended period dismissed the uproar over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the past few days, and said he would approve it if it comes to him.

Support and Opposition

Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their supporters who were seated in a public section, broke into applause after the bill was passed. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would disclose identifying details of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
